ELA blogpicAre you considering LASIK, but aren’t sure where to start? You aren’t the only one that feels this way.The LASIK process and procedure is a lot simpler than you may think! Follow this checklist to ensure you’re on the right track:

Are You a Candidate?

LASIK can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, but it is not right for everyone. In order to be eligible for LASIK you must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be in good health
  • Free of eye injury or eye diseases (glaucoma, cataracts, corneal disease)
  • Should not be pregnant or nursing
  • Contacts must be discontinued prior to the examination and procedure
  • Stable vision for the last 12 months

Book a consultation with a LASIK surgeon to uncover whether LASIK is the right fit for you.

Find the Right Doctor

We only get one set of eyes and you should trust the person handling them! Luckily, picking a surgeon for LASIK is not as hard as other surgeries. When looking for a good and trustworthy surgeon, don’t hesitate to ask questions about certifications and licensing, which can also be found on their website. Lastly, make sure you feel comfortable with the doctor and that they offer a personal approach. It’s important that the doctor makes you feel confident about the procedure and is willing to answer all your questions thoroughly.

Before, During, and After

It is imperative that you’re aware of the process before, during, and after so that you can plan ahead. Before your surgery, ensure that you have arranged transportation, as you will not be able to drive immediately after the procedure. Also, consider taking a few days off for recovery. Even though patients are usually able to return to work or school the next day, it’s better to be safe.

Once the procedure starts, you will be given a mild anti-anxiety medication to diminish any nerves. All that’s left for you to do is relax and the doctors will do the rest!

Once the procedure is finished, your surgeon will walk you through all the precautions you have to take. Be prepared to:

  • Take eye drops
  • Experience some discomfort
  • Not have clear, perfect vision immediately. Final results may take a little time to set in.
  • Not wear makeup after the procedure
  • Wear an eye shield
  • Be very, very careful with your eyes
