How To Choose the Right Sunglasses

Posted on June 18, 2014

When you’re picking out a new pair of sunglasses, what factors do you look for? The color? The brand name? The way they fit your face?

Yes, those things are surely important considerations, but what about whether they actually protect your eyes?

It’s so easy to get caught up in the brand name and style of your sunglasses, that you forget to think about whether or not they block the sun’s rays. Truth is, this is the most important factor of them all.

Poor quality sunglasses can increase your chances of getting “sunburn of the eye,” otherwise known as photokeratitis. It’s caused through direct exposure to UV radiation, and its symptoms include redness, sensitivity and itchiness. Long-term exposure can also lead to cataracts and retina damage.

If you’re thinking of purchasing a new pair of sunglasses for the summer, here’s a list of things you should consider before you open your wallet:

  • Lenses – It may be tempting to choose a funky color, but you should stick to gray or brown to avoid color distortion
  • UV Radiation Protection – Make sure they block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays
  • Fit – They should be close-fitting and preferably wrap around in order to protect your entire eye

Remember, there’s so much more to sunglasses than looking cool. On your next trip to the mall, make sure you write down the tips mentioned above, or print them off to make sure the sunglasses you’re thinking of buying fit the criteria.  Your eyes will thank you!
