Congratulations on your decision to choose LASIK surgery!
Over 20 million people have had this surgery worldwide, and are enjoying the benefits of the amazing results. If you’re ready to take the next step and find out if LASIK is right for you, first, we must determine your candidacy.
In recent years, the technology used in LASIK surgery has become incredibly refined. We are now able to treat patients with a variety of conditions that may have previously been turned away from LASIK. However, there are some requirements that you must satisfy in order to be considered an eligible candidate for this procedure.
There are some basic requirements that we must determine first in order to proceed with your candidacy. This includes:
- Age: you must be over the age of 18 to be considered for this procedure
- Vision Stability: you must have had very little change in your prescription within the last year as verified by your eye doctor.
- Dry Eye: you must not suffer from untreated chronic dry eye
There are a number of other factors that may affect your candidacy for LASIK, this includes, but is not limited to:
- Not currently pregnant/nursing
- No unresolved eye infections or injuries
- No history of herpes simplex and/or herpes zoster virus outbreaks around the face or eyes
If you meet all of the criteria above, the next step is for you to come into our office for a free initial consultation. During this time you will have the opportunity to meet with one of our experienced LASIK specialists who will be happy to answer any remaining questions that you may have. You will learn in detail exactly how the surgery works, what to prepare for and meet some of the members of our surgical team.
During your initial consultation, we will also complete a number of tests to solidify your candidacy for this procedure. This includes things like general health information, a test of your prescription, corneal thickness test, and more. We will also instruct you on what will be required leading up to surgery should you decide to proceed. This will include such things as discontinuing contact lens use for an appropriate period of time before surgery, arranging transportation from our clinic and other details.
Remember: during your initial consultation you are in no way obligated to make a decision on the surgery. Our goal is to simply inform you about the procedure, test your candidacy, and leave you with some additional information while you decide whether or not LASIK is right for you. Our staff are highly trained to help you understand the procedure and to determine your candidacy and are not sales people.
